Plot: Detective Harry Ambrose returns to his hometown to investigate why a young boy killed his parents.
Created By: Derek Simonds
Starring: Bill Pullman, Carrie Coon, Natalie Paul, Hannah Gross, Elisha Henig
Episode one sets everything up nicely. We see the crime, we meet the new characters and we’re left, yet again, with one burning question; why? Why did this little boy murder his parents? Finding out the why is a lot more fun than finding out the who.
Season one was a huge hit and I was completely hooked. Unfortunately, I didn’t get that with season two. I enjoyed season one so much because of how much I felt invested in Cora, Jessica Biel’s character. She was intriguing and I really rooted for her but Julian, the boy who commits the crime in season two, just wasn’t as interesting. I didn’t really care about him or the outcome of his story. I wanted to find out why but didn’t care what happened to the character. I felt there was a real lack of likeable characters this season which is why I felt detached from the show and struggled to get into it.
Hannah Gross, who starred in Mindhunter which is an incredible TV show, was the highlight for me. I think she’s a great actress and she shines on screen. I just wish we could have seen her character a lot more.
There’s no doubt about it, this season had a lot of depth and there is a lot of story to delve into here. There’s twists and turns all over the place but if you don’t like the characters then story sometimes fails to be gripping. People who like these characters will love this season so if you liked the first one then definitely give this one a go. For me, I didn’t like the characters so couldn’t like the story. I think I just missed Jessica Biel too much, she was what made season one great and I really felt the hole that she left.
