Step Sisters (2017)

Plot: Jamilah excels at everything so when one of the mostly white sorority’s embarrasses the school, Jamilah is recruited in pulling them in line.

Director: Charles Stone III

Starring: Megalyn Echikunwoke, Eden Sher, Matt McGorry, Gage Golightly, Naturi Naughton, Marque Richardson, Lyndon Smith

It’s a feel good narrative that falls flat on its face. Films like this are fun and energetic, they’re easy to watch and entertaining but this missed the mark. It was boring and dull. The film has a lot to say about race and sisterhood so there are a lot of relatable aspects. I can see why some people might like this film but for me, there was nothing fun about it. There are better sorority films out there, Bad Neighbours being one of them.

There wasn’t enough dancing for me and I didn’t feel like any of the characters were particularly likeable. There was a stupendous lack of character development, it felt like the script didn’t even care about its characters.
