American Ultra

Plot: Small town stoner, Mike and his girlfriend, Pheobe, live a relatively boring life until their whole world is suddenly turned upside down when he discovers he’s actually a secret agent.

Year: 2015

Director: Nima Nourizadah

Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Kristen Stewart, Topher Grace, Tony Hale, Connie Britton and Bill Pullman.

This film isn’t to be taken seriously. If you do then I don’t think you’ll enjoy it. It’s quite brutal and violent and the plot it a little bit silly but it’s highly entertaining. Mike has had his memory wiped so he has no recollection of being a secret agent, however, he is reactivated and starts to do things he never knew he could. His girlfriend surprisingly stays with him but it soon becomes clear why she does stay with him with a little twist towards the end of the film.

If you’re at a sleepover or just very bored and looking for something fun to do then put this film on. The plot is surprisingly well paced and once the action starts it never really stops. One of the best things about the film is that it starts where it ends and then gives us a flashback of all the events that happened leading up to this point and we start from the beginning. It’s a really cool trick because the clips they include in the flashbacks really hook you and you won’t turn the film off.

Jesse Eisenberg is someone I absolutely admire and adore. I think he is amazing and super talented. Even though I’m not a huge fan of Kristen Stewart I still wanted to watch the film because of Eisenberg but to be honest I was satisfied with Stewart in this film. She wasn’t as annoying as she usually is and obviously these two have worked together before, I think they both have fantastic chemistry and I hope they continue to make more films together in the future. I for one would watch their next film together.

Rating: 6/10.
