Season 4 Episode 1
Well, this was unexpected. The best part about this show is their ability to keep things under wraps. It allows them to shock the audience, continuously. If you haven’t seen this episode yet then I suggest you stop reading now as there will be a lot of spoilers in this post.
First things first, John and Mary finally have their baby and she is just adorable. The scene between the baby and Sherlock involving a rattle being thrown at his head has got to be my favourite from the episode. It was so cute and he talks to her like she understands what he’s saying. I’m glad they’ve added a baby to the cast because Sherlock with a baby is just hilarious to watch.
It made me laugh at the beginning of the episode when Sherlock was constantly on his phone. Even at Rosie’s christening. It’s like real life, people are always on their phones. It just seemed appropriate for this day and age.
Also, we’re introduced to a dog and even though it wasn’t in it for very long, I really liked it. I hope we see him again. Sherlock and a dog is funny too.
The rest of the usual cast are back and better than ever. We waited two years for a new season and it finally arrived in spectacular fashion. Mary died and that’s what was unexpected. John Watson’s wife died. It was very sad but I never really warmed to her so I’m not gutted about this character’s departure. Sometimes I liked her, sometimes I didn’t. She was unpredictable and I never knew if I could fully trust her. I think John deserved so much better. I do feel for him now, though. I hate the fact that John now hates Sherlock because he’s the reason Mary is dead because it’s not entirely his fault. Mary had a dark past that was bound to catch up with her eventually, Sherlock helped her out by tracking down the person who was responsible for ammo.

Sherlock didn’t know Mary was going to jump in front of the bullet to save him. She didn’t have to do that, she chose to do it.
I also hate that they threw in a storyline about John messaging another woman behind Mary’s back. I didn’t really get that and I didn’t think it was necessary. Maybe there will be more about that in the next episode but it just annoyed me.
On a technical note, the show has an amazing cinematographer. Some of the shots where the cast were reflected in something shiny were amazing. There were so many as well. Then there were all the transitions between scenes that were fantastic. I love the way this show is shot, it’s so refreshing and I feel like it’s gotten better with this season. You can see the thought that’s gone into every single shot. It’s astounding.
I can’t wait for the next episode but it’s going to be really annoying if John holds a grudge against Sherlock. I just want them to get back to normal again. This episode was amazing and I’m sure the rest of the season will live up to it.
