Plot: Mickey Cohen runs everything in his town. He’s the boss and he’s filthy rich, buying himself protection, not just from mob members but from police and politicians too. He’s untouchable. However, a small team of officers from the LAPD vow to bring him down and will stop at nothing.
Director: Ruben Fleischer
Starring: Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Anthony Mackie, Nick Nolte and Robert Patrick.
One of the best things about this film is its all-star cast. If that list of actors doesn’t make you want to watch it then I don’t know what will. Gosling and Stone have sizzling chemistry and I’m looking forward to seeing them star in their third film together this Christmas, La La Land. The actors who played the police officers trying to take down Mickey Cohen were absolutely ruthless. It was fantastic. By far, though, my favourite character was Goslings. He seemed to have the biggest heart and that’s what I loved.
It’s not really a unique storyline but it was entertaining and it’s based on a true story which is what makes the story feel more real. It was set in 1949 which is what makes the film so exciting. The fashion and setting were beautiful and they were brought to life by the actors. It made me want to live in that era. It’s a very stylised film that is visually stunning. I would definitely recommend this film to any gangster film fan. It’s one of the best gangster films out there by far.
